FAQ:

Q: Is it possible to hear 24bit audio-files via USB input of DAC Box USB?
A: DAC Box USB is equipped with a 24bit/96kHz DAC processor, that makes it possible to convert 24bit files into analogue, but only when using digital coax (RCA) and optical (Toslink) inputs. USB input only is able to deal with 16bit files, because of technical restrictions in the USB protocol used. So if playback of 24bit audio files is needed, digital coax or Toslink inputs should be used!

Q: Why is there sometimes an audible noise noise and/or interruptions in the playback of audio files via the USB input of DAC Box USB?
A: DAC Box USB only is able to reproduce the signal which comes in. If USB input is used and noise or interrupts can be heard, the main processor could be suffering from capacity overload. Best remedy in this case is to close all applications on the computer, which are not currently being used.

Q: Why does no audio output seem to come from USB source the when USB cable is connected first and then the power adaptor is plugged into mains?
A: DAC Box S USB should be connected to the mains first and a few seconds later the USB cable can be connected to a PC. Doing the opposite way, synchronisation process is eventually faulty and no sound is available via audio outputs.

Comments of Note:
"Intelligently, the unit scans all three when first turned on and locks to whatever is active - you can of course subsequently switch manually between them."
"Using any of the three inputs, this is a lively little device."
"But unlike many examples of energetic hi-fi, it doesn't seem to sacrifice detail in its quest for excitement and it's always possible to hear what's going on behind the main melody."
"Upbeat and rhythmically assured, this versatile DAC is consistent across sources and brings plenty of resolution to the party as well as toe-tapping essentials."

"Even by prevailing standards, the DAC Box USB is a tiddler at just 4 x 10 x 10cm."
"It's certainly not short of low-frequency presence, with the acoustic bass-line granted weight and good tonal variance."
"The midrange is spacious enough to give a singer some room to breathe, and treble is bright and clear without becoming particularly splashy and overbearing."

" Pro-Ject makes a point of this DAC being able to extract bit-perfect audio from your computer if you install ASIO drivers, available from the Pro-Ject website."
"...we found ourselves easily falling for the unit's general enthusiasm."
"Hooked up to a computer-based source, though, it makes a good deal of sense in the best tradition of fun-lovin' budget audio and in that case the S/PDIF inputs could be handy now and then. All-in-all, another useful Box!"

"...this 'DAC Box USB' is its most versatile and universal digital Box to date... it does accomodate three (USB, optical and coaxial) digital sources up to 24-bit/96kHz via S/PDIF and 48kHz via USB 1.1."
"...as my lab tests showed, low-level resolution via USB is actually marginally superior to the conventional S/PDIF inputs."
"Even the perennial bug-bear of digital audio - jitter - is lower via USB..."
"Affordable it may be, but the sound of the DAC Box USB is far from 'budget' in its rendering of acoustic space and detail."
"Its imaging is impressively precise too..."
"High-quality but affordable USB DACs are rather thin on the ground in our experience, so this new addition to Pro-Ject's 'Box Design' series is very welcome."
